We expect to see this in design innovation practice and education. However, it is not the sole preserve of those trained in the traditional creative disciplines, rather, it is a permissive mind-set that underpins a set of behaviours that are pivotal to harnessing creative endeavour for business transformation and new business creation.

Promoting the development of creative confidence requires creating environments that support stakeholders to; understand and accept risk; embrace and exploit ambiguity and uncertainty; and learn from failure. These aspects are taken for granted within design and innovation education and practice settings. However, whilst they are, to some extent, explored in other fields of academic research such as business management, economics and psychology, comparatively little (e.g. Michlewski, 2016 and Yee, et al., 2017) is written from a design and innovation practices research perspective about how creative confidence is developed in either individuals and organisations or about its beneficial effects.

Papers are invited that explore this theme in the context of both academic and/or practice settings in order to reveal current and new thinking around how individual and organisational creativity is supported, nurtured, managed and sustained both in specific project situations and over an extended period. Suggested themes to respond to include:

Developing creative confidence in and through Design and Innovation Education e.g.

What are the roles of supervisors, curriculum design, peer involvement, environment, critique, assessment etc. in nurturing creative confidence?

What is the skill set that underpins confidence when engaging with complex problems?
